Voluntourism is a trend in tourism that combines vacationing and volunteering, and has been considered as an alternative to the traditional vacation of pure leisure. More and more travellers from all around the world wish to visit a destination and help protect endangered species, or participate in animal welfare initiatives. In this way, tourism becomes a responsible activity which respects destinations’ natural habitats and wild life.
In Greece, there are now a wide variety of volunteer opportunities available in almost every local destination.
Become a volunteer and take part in the daily treatment of sea turtles (: caretta caretta) on the island of Zakynthos, where the first National Marine Park of turtles was established in 1999.
Follow the path of a Black Vulture, in Evros; visit island wetlands, where the fish of Rhodes, the Karpathos frog, and other endemic species, need you to help conserve their sensitive ecosystems.
The Mediterranean Monk Seal (: monachus monachus) is one of the biggest seal species, and a sign of Greece’s rich biodiversity. Go to the National Marine Park of Alonissos and support the rescue of newborn pups!
Participate actively in life projects for the seabirds in 17 Greek SPA (Special Protection Areas) sites; monitor the large birds of prey in Antikythira an ideal population monitoring site.
Slender-billed Curlew, as critically endangered species, needs vigilant birdwatchers at Axios, Porto Lagos, Evros, and other areas throughout Greece.
Gain valuable experience from assisting in the protection of large carnivores, such as the brown bear, the wolf and the lynx, either independently or through the European Voluntary Service (EVS).
