The route is quite long (it lasts at least 5 hours), but the experience is totally rewarding!

Starting from Pápigo you can take a much easier, three-hour trail; follow the path leading to Astráka refuge and then head for Astráka and Lápatos summits. Explore the magical “Drakolimni”, one of the three alpine lakes in Pindus mountain range, which according to local legends used to be inhabited by dragons!

Don’t miss the opportunity to walk the famous Vradeto Stairs at the edge of Vickos gorge. These stone 1,200 meter stairs connect the villages Vradéto and Kapésovo, and they were the only access to Vradéto village until 1973!

And when your day comes to an end, experience the true magic of Zayorohória: have a delicious meal in a mezedopoleío (local tavern), or enjoy a glass of fine wine by the fireplace in one of the traditional guesthouses of the area!

Horseback riding on Mount Pelion, near the seashore!

With a history almost as old as humankind itself, horseback riding combines uniquely the thrilling adventure with the fundamental value of ecotourism: total respect for the natural environment. Unlike other adventurous sports, horseback riding remains unchanged since antiquity, having as its endearing feature the intimate relationship between man and horse.

According to Greek mythology, Mount Pelion was the home of the mythical Centaurs, creatures who were half-men and half-horses. Ancient Greek heroes such as Achilles, Jason and Theseus came to Mount Pelion to master the arts taught by the Centaurs.

Nowadays, as you enter this kingdom of nature, all your senses are heightened, eager to experience this unspoiled world. The horseback trip starts in Argalasti, an attractive village on the south of the peninsula of Magnesia, far from the usual tourist routes.

From here you can reach beaches on both sides of the peninsula – open sea or calm gulf –, where you can enjoy the sea and the sun and get a bite in picturesque seaside taverns; or you can picnic in nature before you return to Argalasti for the evening. The area around Argalasti is hilly but relatively even, without steep gradients, covered with groves of perennial olive trees, interspersed with forest and brush, or streambeds in the shade of luxuriant plane trees.

The cobblestone trails between villages travel you through time and they are ideal for horseback riding. The main trails out of Argalasti lead to many interesting locations, such as Kalamos (6 km to the W) and Lefokastro (6 km to the NW). In many places along the trails the woods are very thick, offering enough shade for comfortable horseback riding even in summertime. There are some impressive beaches near Argalasti you can visit on horseback. On the outer or Aegean side of the peninsula, there is Paltsi (13 km to the E), Potistika (10 km on the E) and Melani (10 km on the E). Paltsi is a remote and quiet beach. Potistika is a broad sandy beach with towering rocks. Melani is a sandy beach also accessible by dirt road. On the inner or gulf side of the peninsula, the finest beach is called Marmaro (next to Kalamos).

ERA Airline of the Year

Ως αεροπορική εταιρία της Χρονιάς 2010/11 (ERA Airline of the Year), αναδείχθηκε η Olympic Air,κερδίζοντας το αργυρό βραβείο (Silver Award) στο διαγωνισμό που διοργανώνει κάθε χρόνο ο Σύνδεσμος Ευρωπαϊκών Περιφερειακών Αεροπορικών Εταιρειών (European Regions Airline Association).

Η απονομή έγινε στη Βαρκελώνη, κατά τη διάρκεια της ετήσιας Γενικής Συνέλευσης του ERA, σε ειδική εκδήλωση και με την παρουσία εκατοντάδων συμμετεχόντων από την ευρωπαϊκή αεροπορική βιομηχανία. Το "ERA Airline of the Year Award" επιβραβεύει την ποιότητα των καλύτερων ευρωπαϊκών περιφερειακών αεροπορικών εταιρειών, λαμβάνοντας υπόψη ευρύ φάσμα κριτηρίων, στην όλη δραστηριότητα μίας αεροπορικής εταιρίας. Το βραβείο του ERA αντιπροσωπεύει την πιο σημαντική αναγνώριση στον Ευρωπαϊκό Περιφερειακό χώρο των αερομεταφορών και χαίρει διεθνώς εκτίμησης και αξίας ως προς την αντικειμενικότητα και την ανεξαρτησία γνώμης της κριτικής επιτροπής.
H κριτική επιτροπή, η οποία αποτελείτο από ανώτατα στελέχη και ειδικούς στο χώρο της Πολιτικής Αεροπορίας (πρώην διευθύνοντες σύμβουλοι αεροπορικών εταιριών και ανεξάρτητοι δημοσιογράφοι) έλαβε υπόψη της μια σειρά από εξειδικευμένα κριτήρια.
Μεταξύ αυτών τη δυναμική ανάπτυξη της Olympic Air, τη στρατηγική διαφήμισης και προώθησης του αεροπορικού προϊόντος της, τη δραστηριοποίησή της σε θέματα ασφάλειας και περιβάλλοντος, καθώς και την ενεργή συμμετοχή της στα ζητήματα που απασχολούν τον ευρωπαϊκό κλάδο των αερομεταφορών.
Κυρίως όμως, η απόφαση να βραβευθεί η Olympic Air στηρίχτηκε σε ένα σύνολο δεδομένων, όπως οι τεχνικές και λειτουργικές προδιαγραφές της, η ποιότητα των παρεχόμενων υπηρεσιών και η ικανοποίηση του επιβατικού κοινού, η πληρότητα και η ακρίβεια των πτήσεων της, η διάρθρωση του στόλου και η ανάπτυξη του δικτύου της, οι εμπορικές καινοτομίες για την εξυπηρέτηση του κοινού, η γενικότερη εταιρική στρατηγική καθώς και η χρηματοοικονομική της ανάπτυξη.
H Olympic Air είναι μέλος του ΕRΑ, ο οποίος έχει πάνω από 200 εταιρείες-μέλη και είναι το μόνο σώμα που εκπροσωπεί τα συμφέροντα της Περιφερειακής Αεροπορικής Βιομηχανίας στην Ευρώπη. Εκπροσωπεί 70 αεροπορικές εταιρείες που καλύπτουν 426 προορισμούς σε 61 ευρωπαϊκές χώρες, μεταφέροντας 70.600.000 επιβάτες και εκτελώντας 1,6 εκατ. πτήσεις ετησίως. Strike grounds flights again

FLIGHTS to and from Greece will be grounded for four hours on July 15 when air traffic controllers walk off the job to join public sector unions in a walkout against labour reforms.

Air traffic controllers had originally planned to walk out for four hours tomorrow, but decided to postpone it until Thursday instead.

Public sector union ADEDY will also strike on July 15 with plans to march to parliament as lawmakers vote on retirement rules.

Greece’s parliament approved a pension reform last week that will see the retirement age raised from 60 to 65 years for all.

Trade unions have announced plans to continue with labour action in the coming months to protest these reforms. Airlines are expected to release a flight cancellation bulletin later today.

Meanwhile European trade unions are planning a “Europe Day of Action” on September 29 to protest against austerity across Europe.

Κατατέθηκε χθες στη Βουλή το πολυπόθητο νομοσχέδιο σχετικά με την άρση του καμποτάζ που σύσσωμοι όλοι οι τουριστικοί φορείς το ζητούν εδώ και καιρό. Η άρση του καμποτάζ αναμένεται να ωφελήσει τις συνδεόμενες με τη θαλάσσια κρουαζιέρα ελληνικές επιχειρήσεις, καθώς και να ενισχύσει τη δημιουργία νέων θέσεων εργασίας.

Για την απόφαση επεξεργασίας του θεσμικού πλαισίου για την άρση του καμποτάζ, το ΥΠΟΙΑΝ συνέστησε ειδική Επιτροπή, η οποία εξέδωσε πόρισμα για την άρση των απαγορεύσεων κα τη θεσμοθέτηση νέου πλαισίου. Οι ίδιες πηγές σημειώνουν σε δημοσιεύματα πως το πόρισμα αυτό, το οποίο έτυχε ευρύτατης αποδοχής από εκπροσώπους όλων των φορέων έτυχε περαιτέρω επεξεργασίας από την Επιτροπή για τον Θαλάσσιο Τουρισμό, με τη συμμετοχή όλων των εκπροσώπων των παραγωγικών τάξεων.

Σημειώνεται ότι στο σχέδιο νόμου προβλέπεται ότι:

- Το πλοία που θα εκτελούν κρουαζιέρες θα πρέπει να μεταφέρουν περισσότερους από 49 επιβάτες. Η διάρκεια του ταξιδιού είναι κατ’ ελάχιστον σαράντα οκτώ (48) ώρες και η παραμονή στο αφετήριο ελληνικό λιμάνι τουλάχιστον δώδεκα (12) ώρες.

- Οι πλοιοκτήτριες εταιρίες υπογράφουν με το Ελληνικό Δημόσιο σύμβαση, μέχρι τριετούς διάρκειας, η οποία μπορεί να παραταθεί. Με τη σύμβαση αυτή ρυθμίζονται ιδίως τα εξής θέματα:

Η απασχόληση και ασφάλιση των Ελλήνων Ναυτικών που προσλαμβάνονται από τα πλοία αυτά, καθώς και η παροχή οικονομικών κινήτρων για την πρόσληψη αυτών,

Η βεβαίωση και είσπραξη της ειδικής εισφοράς για κάθε επιβάτη, που επιβιβάζεται στον λιμένα αφετηρίας του ταξιδιού, η οποία θα εισπράττεται στο λιμάνι αφετηρίας του ταξιδιού. Τα έσοδα από τις εισφορές θα διατεθούν υπέρ του Κεφαλαίου Ανεργίας και Ασθενείας Ναυτικών (Κ.Α.Α.Ν.). Το ύψος της εισφοράς θα ορίζεται με απόφαση του ΥΠΟΙΑΝ. Για κάθε επιπλέον ελληνικό λιμάνι που θα περιλαμβάνεται στο ταξίδι, θα γίνεται μείωση του τέλους κατά 7%.

Η τυχόν διενέργεια επενδύσεων στη χώρα από τις πλοιοκτήτριες εταιρίες

Οι όροι παράτασης και πρόωρης λύσης της σύμβασης και οποιαδήποτε άλλη αναγκαία ρύθμιση για την εφαρμογή του νόμου.

- Με κοινή απόφαση του Υπουργού Οικονομίας Ανταγωνιστικότητας και Ναυτιλίας και του Υπουργού Πολιτισμού και Τουρισμού, καθορίζεται το ακριβές περιεχόμενο των συμβάσεων αυτών, εξασφαλίζεται η ενιαία εφαρμογή τους για όλα τα πλοία και προσδιορίζονται τα κριτήρια για κάθε πλοίο, όπως η μεταφορική ικανότητα, η στελέχωση του πλοίου, ο αριθμός των δρομολογίων, η συχνότητα και η περιοδικότητα των προσεγγίσεων σε ελληνικούς λιμένες, η τήρηση των διεθνών συμβάσεων για την ασφάλεια της ναυσιπλοΐας και της ανθρώπινης ζωής στη θάλασσα.

- Οι συμβάσεις των Ελλήνων που προσλαμβάνονται, διέπονται από τις, εκάστοτε ισχύουσες στην Ελλάδα, Συλλογικές Συμβάσεις Εργασίας της ειδικότητάς τους. Οι εργαζόμενοι παραμένουν ασφαλισμένοι στον φορέα ασφάλισής τους, σύμφωνα με την ελληνική νομοθεσία και με τους ίδιους όρους ασφάλισης.

- Το ΥΠΟΙΑΝ θα εκπονήσει άμεσα, πρότυπο σχέδιο σύμβασης, το οποίο θα άρει τις περιττές γραφειοκρατικές εμπλοκές. Καθορίζεται ως μέγιστος χρόνος υπογραφής της σύμβασης οι 30 ημέρες από την υποβολή της σχετικής αίτησης του πλοίου, συνοδευομένης από τα αναγκαία δικαιολογητικά, τα οποία ορίζονται με την Κοινή Υπουργική Απόφαση του εδαφίου αυτού

- Προβλέπεται η λύση της σύμβασης, με καταγγελία από το Ελληνικό Δημόσιο, για παραβίαση οποιασδήποτε διάταξης του σχεδίου νόμου Η λύση της σύμβασης με πρωτοβουλία της πλοιοκτήτριας εταιρίας θα ρυθμίζεται με τους όρους της σύμβασης.

- Εξασφαλίζεται η άμεση εφαρμογή της άρσης του καμποτάζ για την τρέχουσα τουριστική περίοδο, με τη χορήγηση προσωρινής άδειας μετά από αίτηση της πλοιοκτήτριας εταιρίας, η οποία θα ισχύσει μέχρι την 31η Δεκεμβρίου του 2010. Εκτιμάται πως με τις διατάξεις του Σχεδίου Νόμου εξομοιώνονται τα πλοία με σημαία τρίτης χώρας, με ό,τι ισχύει για τα πλοία με σημαία των χωρών της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης και των χωρών του Ε.Ο.Χ., εξασφαλίζεται η σχέση αμοιβαιότητας μεταξύ των τρίτων χωρών, τη σημαία των οποίων φέρουν τα πλοία που θα εκτελέσουν τους πλόες που ρυθμίζονται με το σχέδιο νόμου με τις χώρες - μέλη της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης και του Ε.Ο.Χ για τη διενέργεια αντίστοιχων πλόων καθώς και εξομοιώνονται τα πλοία με σημαίες τρίτων χωρών με τα Ελληνικά και Κοινοτικά πλοία, ως προς τις πειθαρχικές και ποινικές ευθύνες, χωρίς εξαιρέσεις.

Πολλαπλάσια τα οφέλη από τις κρουαζιέρες σε αντίθεση με όσα υποστηρίζει η ΠΝΟ

Τη στιγμή που οι υπεύθυνοι της Πανελλήνιας Ναυτικής Ομοσπονδίας (ΠΝΟ) προσπαθούν να πείσουν την κοινή γνώμη ότι το δικό τους δικαίωμα στην απεργία είναι πιο ισχυρό από το δικαίωμα άλλων επαγγελματικών κλάδων για εργασία και ανάπτυξη, ο Σύνδεσμος Ελληνικών Τουριστικών Επιχειρήσεων (ΣΕΤΕ) παρουσιάζει τεκμηριωμένα και λεπτομερή στοιχεία για τα οφέλη τόσο της χώρας όσο και μίας πληθώρας επαγγελματικών κλάδων από την άρση του καμποτάζ.

Ειδικότερα, η σημασία για την απασχόληση της κρουαζιέρας που χρησιμοποιεί τα ελληνικά λιμάνια ως βάση (homeporting) σε σχέση με την κρουαζιέρα που απλά διέρχεται transit είναι πολύ σημαντική. Τα δε έσοδα ανά επιβάτη είναι τουλάχιστον εννέα φορές περισσότερα.

Συγκεκριμένα, σύμφωνα με τα στοιχεία που παρουσιάζει ο ΣΕΤΕ, τα χαρακτηριστικά των κρουαζιερών transit σε σχέση με τις κρουαζιέρες homeporting είναι τα ακόλουθα:

Α. Διελεύσεις (transit)

Πολλά κρουαζιερόπλοια χρησιμοποιούν τα ελληνικά λιμάνια και κυρίως τον Πειραιά για ολιγόωρες επισκέψεις, η διάρκεια των οποίων συνήθως κυμαίνεται μεταξύ 4 – 6 ωρών. Στην περίπτωση αυτή, η μέση δαπάνη ανά επιβάτη κρουαζιέρας transit είναι 65 Ευρώ.

Β. Τα ελληνικά λιμάνια ως βάση για τις κρουαζιέρες (homeporting), δηλαδή, ο ίδιος επιβάτης επιβιβάζεται και αποβιβάζεται στο ίδιο ελληνικό λιμάνι.

Η βασική διαφορά με την κρουαζιέρα transit έγκειται στο εξής:

O επιβάτης παραμένει στον προορισμό 2 ή 3 μέρες (αντί των 4 – 6 ωρών του transit) πριν ή μετά την κρουαζιέρα. Αυτό, προφανώς, δημιουργεί πρόσθετα έσοδα για τον προορισμό, διότι ο επιβάτης χρησιμοποιεί ξενοδοχεία, κινείται περισσότερο επισκεπτόμενος διάφορα μέρη στον προορισμό και έχει περισσότερο χρόνο για αγορές.

Στην περίπτωση αυτή, η μέση δαπάνη ανά επιβάτη κρουαζιέρας homeporting είναι 574 Ευρώ.

Empty beaches and great deals in Greece
Bookings to Greece are down thanks to this month's riots and strikes, but that means you could pick up a bargain this summer. Gemma Bowes reports from a blissfully quiet Kefalonia.

Oh, so quiet ... Myrtos Beach, Kefalonia, Greece

The little fishing harbour of Fiscardo, in the north of Kefalonia, is often described in guidebooks as Greece's prettiest village. The Venetian houses that line its waterfront are painted in sugary shades with contrasting doors and windows – blush-rose and green, lilac and pink, orange and red – all lit up like a twinkling rainbow at night. They form an enchanting, if slightly twee, setting, where holidaying couples and yachties potter from taverna to taverna to ponder whose bream might be freshest, which rabbit stifado the more traditional. A 30-minute drive south, beyond the equally pretty Assos, is the incredible curve of perfect white sand, leaking into water the bright turquoise of antifreeze, of Myrtos beach, one of Greece's most photographed.

These treasures, along with the Ionian island's legacy as the setting for Captain Corelli's Mandolin, have made Kefalonia one of Greece's most popular holiday islands. And yet, when I visited the week before last, it seemed rather empty.

This has been a dire month for Greece's tourism industry. The riots in Athens at the start of May, strike action affecting ferries, flights and goods transportation, financial meltdown, and then, to top it off, the ash clouds interrupting flights . . . all that was missing was an outbreak of bird flu to see off the country's image as a safe, easy holiday destination.

The sum effect caused one Fiscardo barman to conclude "this summer, there will be no summer" as he served our mojitos in an empty bar.

Volcanic ash had prevented the Manchester flight bringing in that week's northern tourists, and the weather was a bit iffy, but according to Tassos, the owner of our villa, Trizoni, Kefalonia's holiday villa owners were seriously worried about the coming season, and struggling to fill their properties.

Around 27,000 hotel nights were cancelled in the Athens area in the three weeks following the riots at the start of May, and many tour operators reported a nosedive in bookings – Thomas Cook said its were down 24% on last year; Olympic Holidays, the UK's biggest Greece specialist, said June bookings were down, though the World Cup was also a factor. "We undoubtedly saw a slowdown in bookings to Greece," said Chris Lorenzo, managing director of Seafarer, a Greek sailing specialist, "but media coverage has grossly exaggerated the riots and other problems, which has turned people away."

It all began in the 1960s, when Nicholas and Dolly Goulandris began to collect ancient artefacts and Cycladic figurines. As time went on, the collection increased in size and travelled to important museums all over the world. The Museum of Cycladic Art opened its doors to the public in January 1986.

Today, over 3,000 artefacts of Cycladic, Ancient Greek and Cypriot art are on display on four floors, in the galleries of the Museum, a living cultural space in the heart of Athens. One of the Museum wings that hosts temporary exhibitions is the Stathatos Mansion (1 Irodotou & Vas. Sofias Ave), one of the best examples of neoclassical architecture in Athens, work of the Bavarian architect Ernest Ziller. A glass-covered passage connects Stathatos Mansion to the Permanent Collections building at 4 Neophytou Douka Str.

Cycladic Art Collection

The Museum’s Collection of Cycladic Art, one of the most important in the world, is a pole of attraction for young and old alike. The austere marble figurines depicting nude figures of humans enchant visitors with their simplicity and abstraction – features that have, indeed, inspired 20th-century artists such as Brancusi, Modigliani, Giacometti, Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore and others.

Ancient Greek Art Collection

A synthetic approach to the history of the Aegean societies from 2.000 BC to the 4th c. AD. With the aid of about 350 exhibits and interactive applications, visitors can follow the most important social and political developments from the birth of ancient Greek civilisation down to its creative blending with the Roman tradition, as reflected in constant changes in art and ideology. Part of the exhibition is devoted to ancient Greek technology.

Th. Zintilis Collection of Cypriot Antiquities

The Thanos N. Zintilis Collection of Cypriot Antiquities, one of the most important private collections of Cypriot antiquities in the world, includes about 400 artefacts made of stone, clay, bronze, silver, gold, glass, and faience are on display, representing a broad spectrum of Cypriot civilisation from the Chalcolithic period (4th millennium BC) down to Early Byzantine times (6th c. AD).

Scenes from daily life in Antiquity

From the Ancient Greek Art collections of the Museum, 150 objects (vases, figurines and weapons) are presented, grouped by theme: Gods and Heroes, Eros, the World of Women, the World of Men, and the Underworld. The permanent display is accompanied by two audiovisual presentations on everyday life and burial customs in ancient times.

Cabotage to be lifted

HIGHLIGHTING the importance which the government attaches to tourism for Greece’s economic recovery, Prime Minister George Papandreou announced the lifting of cabotage restrictions that have prevented foreign cruise ships from operating along the Greek coastline.

“The government is ready to make any decisions regarding the strategic sectors of the Greek economy that serve the interests of national prosperity,” Papandreou said on April 21 while addressing the annual general assembly of the Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises (SETE).

Responding in particular to the steadfast demand of tour operators and travel agencies for the lifting of cabotage, he announced that “a dialogue will be held with all the agencies involved in the sector until the end of May, so that the lifting of cabotage on cruise ships can go ahead immediately”.
